Autopatcher was the perfect solution to update your Windows operating system while it lasted. You could download all patches to your local computer and execute them there. This made it possible to download patches once and update several computers locally without download the patches several times from Microsoft servers.

Autopatcher has been closed down by Microsoft. There is an alternative, a great one that can be used instead. It is called Offline Updater. It supports Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, windows Server 2003, 64-bit editions of XP and Server 2003 as well as Windows Vista. Besides the operating systems it also supports Office 2000, Office XP, Office 2003 and Office 2007. As you can see from the screenshot below lots of different languages are supported as well.

In Windows XP and earlier, the WMP plugin file “npdsplay.dll” and related plugin files are normally included in the Windows Media Player program folder. Just yesterday my customer encountered a problem where his computer wasn’t able to boot in Windows. It just got to the point where it loading Windows with the bar and then the screen is blank. However, there’s no problem in booting into Safe Mode. My guess is if you’re able to boot in Safe Mode but not in Windows, chances are the drivers might be corrupted. I uninstalled the display driver from Safe Mode. True enough, I am able to boot in to normal Windows but without display driver. So everything looks big with the 640 x 480 resolution.

Now I need to download the latest display driver to install on to the computer. I asked my customer whether he has any idea what video card is on his computer and he didn’t had a clue. I can use a CD or USB flash drive that contains utility that can automatically detect the video card on that computer. There’s another method on how you can manually detect what video card you have by using the built-in Windows debug tool.
So, to go to my web site at www.debshinder.com, you only have to type “debshinder” and then hit CTRL+ENTER, saving a number of keystrokes (Note that this also works in Firefox 2.0.0.3).

If you use the Disk Cleanup utility in Vista to clean out your Temp folder, you may be unknowingly leaving files there, because it only lists the files that are more than a week old. If you want to adopt a “no temp file left behind” policy, you have to empty the folder manually. Here’s how:

Click Start and in the Search box, type %temp%

This will open the Temp folder, which is located by default in the Users\\AppData\Local path on the drive where Vista is installed.

Manually highlight all files by pressing CTRL+A.

Press Delete or right click and select Delete from the context menu.

Although a clean install is often the best policy, some may prefer to go the upgrade route and install Windows Vista over an existing Windows XP system. This procedure has the virtue of (mostly) preserving old settings. However, all may not be satisfactory after this type of installation and you may want your XP system back. How to do this is explained in this Microsoft article.

Of course, you should have made a complete backup of your previous system before installing Vista and restoring that backup may be easier than the process given in the article. One thing to remember is that Vista changes the boot process so you may need to restore the boot sector as outlined in the Microsoft article. Also whatever backup method that was used should include the hidden boot files boot.ini and Ntldr. A complete disk image is my preferred backup method.
.

It is really painful to copy files using the Windows explorer. It only displays one folder at a time and it is often inevitable to open two explorer windows to copy files from one folder to another. This takes lots of time and is not very ergonomic. The software Folder Box is a windows explorer upgrade which adds another window to the windows explorer. This makes it very easy to transfer files from one folder to the other or perform other file operations that require two folders.

Several software music players and mp3 players do not support WMA files at all. Wma, Windows Media Audio, is a format that was developed by Microsoft and initially designed to compete with the popular mp3 format. WMA however never received the popularity of the mp3 format and many users don’t like WMA at all because of its DRM capabilities. Converting WMA to MP3 is one solution to get rid of WMA files and make them playable in your software and mp3 players. One way to convert wma audio files to mp3 is to use the software Free WMA to MP3 Converter.

In the Microsoft Windows operating system, index.dat is a file used by the Internet Explorer web browser. Index.dat files are hidden files on your computer that contain all tracks of your online activity, where have you been on internet, what sites you visited, list of URLs, files and documents you recently accessed. Index.dat files stored on your computer are obviously a potential privacy threat as they can be found and viewed without your knowledge.

This is a great addition to the search in Windows Vista, especially if you do work with those file formats regularly.

If you ever wanted to have a free software that would be able to handle all the different zip formats then you might want to take a look at the open source program called Universal Extractor. Universal Extractor can only be used to extract archives handling this task excellently. It supports a multitude of zip formats including the following popular ones: 7-zip archive, ace archive, arj, gzip, rar, tar and zip archives.

Next to that it can also unpack files from installation packages, it would be no problem for instance to unpack Windows Installer Package files (msi) or unpack the latest Firefox release with the Universal Extractor. It does not make that much sense to use a program like Winrar if you never pack files yourself, a tool that would extract all the archives would be more than enough.
