Technology has changed dramatically in the last decade. OpenSSH is one the best project. It allows you to control remote Linux / UNIX server using command line or GUI tools.

Do you miss GUI configuration server management tools such as Debian network-admin or Redhat/Cent os system-config-* tools/utilities while administrating a Linux server? Do you want to run GUI admin tools on a remote Linux server and get display on local desktop or laptop X server system?

Recover deleted or corrupted Thunderbird messages

It sometimes happens that I delete a mail by accident because it does look like spam or a message that I do not longer need. Thunderbird does not display that message anymore if it is completely deleted from the mail client. Unknown to many Thunderbird does not delete the messages but flags them only which means it is relatively easy to recover corrupted or deleted mails. This method only works if you have not compressed the mail folders because compressing removes deleted messages from the mail files.

If you�re new to Linux and intent on peering under the hood a bit to see what makes things work, then you�ve probably encountered a range of files which are compressed in various formats. This guide is meant to be a quick and easy way to distinguish what�s what in compressed files. It�s written on and for Ubuntu but will be very useful for other distributions as well.

.gz, .tar.gz, .bz2, .zip � these are all files that have been compressed in one form or another. Compressed? There�s a real good technical explanation for what compression is and how the varying utilities achieve their end goal, but we�re not going to go into this here. Suffice it to say that compressing something is squishing it down to a smaller size so that it can be more easily stored or transported about. Uncompressing is doing the opposite so that we end up with the original, full sized file in the end.

Secure your Wi-Fi traffic using FOSS utilities

A recent Slashdot item on Wi-Fi security was a timely reminder of the weaknesses of default Wi-Fi encryption protocols, and the dangers of using unencrypted, public Wi-Fi connections. Fortunately, you can use FOSS utilities to securely tunnel your Wi-Fi connection sessions and protect your Web and email traffic.

To facilitate encrypting your Wi-Fi traffic, first set up dynamic DNS service so you can locate your server when you’re away from home. You then port-forward SSH connections through your router to an SSH server, configuring the server to accept only key-authenticated connections. You can then tunnel your email and Web traffic from a remote client through an encrypted SSH tunnel into your home network, and then on to the Internet.

To start, be sure you have an SSH client on your laptop and a Linux server on your home network that is running the sshd daemon, and be sure that the server’s iptables-based software firewall is configured to allow SSH connections.

Contig from SysInternal is a handy app that lets you do a defragmentation on a single file(or flies) but don’t want to bother running the Windows defragger and waiting overnight for it to finish. Usefull for those who are continiously working on big files. eg. compressing/uncompressing those rar01, rar02 files from bit torrent or adding/removing files to those iso files.

Apple’s FileVault is great if you want or need to secure your entire home folder. Unfortunately, FileVault does not encrypt your data on a second hard-drive or a removable drive. If, like me, you use an external portable firewire hard-drive when traveling, you can you Apple’s Disk Image Encryption to securely encrypt the data on your removable media.

To create a new “Disk Image” with Encryption

Open the Disk Utility under \applications\utilities.

Click on New Image

Type in the new image name,

Set the encryption to AES-128 bit

Pick an image size appropriate for your removable hard-drive

The image will show up as a volume on your desktop.

Now drag the new image to your portable hard-drive and you are done. All file placed inside the new volume will be automatically encrypted and secured.

You can move files to or from an encrypted disk image as easily as you can from a non-encrypted disk image.

If you want to copy files from one folder to a different one you will have to open two windows showing both folders and use drag and drop to copy the files. I think you can�t have enough file recovery utilities once you lost data on your computer either by accidentaly deleting the files or by crashes or hardware failures. It is better to have one additional try at recovering the data than to give up if the first program that you�ve been using failed to recover the files. It is even better to already have those programs installed or ready at hand to use them immediately after you have lost the files. Chances that you are able to recover the files are highest right after the incident because no new data was written in the sectors the deleted files occupied.

Videojug is a service that lets users share information. However, it’s sharing information in an extremely intuitive way: Sharing through the use of videos. It’s a really neat concept that I’m sure will take off pretty nicely given its sometimes funny approaches.

Take for an example, a video recently posted on how to make naan bread. The user has put together a nice little directional video on how to actually make it. It’s a visual help guide, helping get points across easier, and with a little more explaining and nice visuals. Videos can be uploaded, tagged and searched which makes it extremely easy to find what you need help on. Each video also has a feedback form, text version, and iPod and PSP formats. Current sections on Videojug include Food, Drinks, DIY, Home, Beauty, Health, and Leisure. Each with a nice drop down list of sub topics.

There are some really interesting videos here too. Besides making nann, you can watch videos on applying bronzer, How to remove a foreign object from the ear, and How to unblock a toilet.

Our favorite VoIP tool has made it a lot easier for us to make calls directly from Outlook, Outlook Express, and Thunderbird. The new toolbar that Skype has released installs and displays icons based on the Skype names and phone numbers that are written in actual emails.

Through the Skype toolbar you can also see what one of your contacts is online, call them, and for quick notes back about emails, you can also instant message your contacts quickly. Skype also gives you the option of adding a Skype buton to your email signature so that other people can call you easily.

MoneyTwins uses a price for the exchange rate that only the largest top financial institutions use, which is lower than usual, saving a ton of money for end users by not charging commissions, or transaction fees. There is a chart on the site that lists the last 10 orders for transfers which looks rather interesting. It lists the Client, Buying currency, Selling currency, Amount, Place, and a Rating. I would have thought that information like this should be a little more secure then this?

The MoneyTwins service is still in beta, and it is a great idea, however, fixing up the site so that it appeared as that of a financial institution, with a little more appeal and professionalism might make a few more people try the service, and not be afraid that they are getting scammed.

You can download and install Yahoo! Messenger with Voice 8 from Yahoo!. However, Yahoo! forces you in such a way that you need to download a small setup program installer that will later initiate the download, setup and installation of actually Yahoo! Messenger setup file. This is troublesome for those IM lovers who don’t have always-on Internet access, or have slow Internet connection speed, or want to offline install, or want to network install, or simply want to keep the binary for future installation, or for whatever other reasons.

Whatever reason you have, you can download full standalone setup installer for Yahoo! Messenger with Voice 8 (currently at version 8.0.0.683) from here (about > 9 MB, should be the general link that download the latest version) or here (version 8.0.0.683). If you install Yahoo! Messenger with Voice by using the small loader setup file, you can find the full setup file at C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Installs (assuming you install using default folder destination), as YM8 setup file is downloaded temporarily here for installation. However, the full installation file will be deleted once installation is completed. So you need to get the installer during the installation.

A-Patch is an utility to customize visual and functionality aspects of Windows Live Messenger or MSN Messenger. A-Patch has 70 features for customization or configure on Windows Live Messenger.

Here is the simple trick

Before start this trick, make sure you backups your current Windows live messenger setting first.

Turn off your Windows Live Messenger
Download A-Patch and run �A-Patch130rc1b44_WLM� file from this ZIP archive.
Choose option – > Patch Messenger and Press ” Next “
Choose select patch options that you want then again. make sure your Windows live Messenger is turn off.
Apply patch then Restart Computer.

You can restore back the patch option by restore back the Windows live messenger setting by running A-patch Exe and select ” Restore Setting ” option

Playing software patch is a dangerous way on windows but worth to take off ads from Windows Live Messenger

Skype has just signed a co-marketing deal with iSkoot, a company which makes a program of the same name which allows Java-enabled mobile phones and smartphones to use the voice capabilities of Skype. iSkoot gives you full access to your Skype contacts as well as regular phone numbers via SkypeOut. Though using iSkoot still uses you minutes, if you use Skype a lot or make international calls, iSkoot could be pretty cost-effective. It’s currently free but the web site seems to hint that it will eventually be a subscription service. PC World and MobHappy have more details.
