Perhaps I’ve been out of the loop, but why are web 2.0 RSS readers emerging now? For nearly a year, I’ve used Bloxor, a PHP/MySQL-based feed reader, to gather feed content from my favorite sites. (There is a service, but I opted to install the app on my server.) Bloxor is quite nice, don’t get me wrong. But it’s not perfect either. And yet I haven’t seen anything come around that just sweeps me off my feet with that perfect blend of design and function.

I spent two hours with Google Reader whenever it arrived. No thanks. (Does anyone use this? I almost forget it even exists. No one I know uses it—that I know of… )

Bloglines? Far from useful.

Countless other web-based RSS readers have been released to the world only to fall short of really making it happen.

I do have high hopes though.

Steve Smith has Canary Reader cooking. And I really think if it’s going to be successful, there are only a few people who can guide it there. Steve Smith is one of the few.

I also just stumbled on Feeds 2.0 out of Greece. (Thanks to a nice TechTips article for the link.)

At the onset, either one of these apps could be the next greatest web application and could solve the deficit of web-based RSS reader. I certainly hope we get somewhere soon.

If you’ve run across a great reader (web-based or desktop client) that you’d like to share with the group, lay it down here.

Technorati Tags: rss, reader, web

Addendum: I was recently added to the TechTips roster of contributors. Glad to be on board! Thanks, Chandu. (And thanks Technorati for the referral. )

There are two different protocols available to access e-mail: POP3 and IMAP. POP3 is useful when e-mail is checked from only one computer. IMAP is the better choice when you would like to check your mail from multiple computers, at work and home, for example. IMAP has the added benefit of accessing folders on the server, allowing you to organize your e-mail, and access it from anywhere. If you use Webmail, you should use IMAP on all of your e-mail clients. Use of a POP3 mail client in association with Webmail can cause errors in your inbox that will result in a temporary loss of access to your mail.

The Difference
POP3 works by reviewing the inbox on the mail server, and downloading the new messages to your computer. IMAP downloads the headers of the new messages on the server, then retrieves the message you want to read when you click on it.

When using POP3, your mail is stored on your PC. When using IMAP, the mail is stored on the mail server. Unless you copy a message to a “Local Folder” the messages are never copied to your PC.

Scenarios of Use

POP3

You only check e-mail from one computer.

You want to remove your e-mail from the mail server.

IMAP

You check e-mail from multiple locations.

You use Webmail.

Tips
Keep your Inbox small! This will speed up your e-mail retrieval. Checking the e-mail is directly dependent on how many e-mail messages are in your inbox on the mail server.

POP3

Set to remove mail from server after 30 days.

Don’t check more frequently than every 15 minutes.

75 MB is the maximum for POP3 users. POP’ing large mail boxes consumes excessive server resources.

IMAP

Do NOT check all folders for new messages! This slows your e-mail substantially.

Use “mail/” ( without the quotes ) as your IMAP folder directory.

You can set your client to download the mail and to remove the mail from the server, like a POP3 client.

Organize your mail into folders, and archive your older messages. This speeds e-mail retrieval by minimizing the number of messages in the inbox.

Errors caused by using POP3 and Webmail
When used in conjunction with a permanent e-mail client, Webmail can be a useful way to check and send messages while you are away from your computer. However, if there is a POP3 e-mail client automatically checking your mail every so many minutes, and you are also accessing Webmail from another location, there is the possibility that your mailbox will become corrupt. It will appear as if your mailbox is empty in Webmail, and your mail client will deny you access to your messages. You mailbox can be restored by simply calling the Help Desk; there is no reason to become alarmed. This can be avoided by setting your mail client to use IMAP.

This was long overdue. For a country that aspires to be a de-facto tech powerhouse, India was certainly short of a really good technology portal. That’s set to change with the launch of PCWorld, a website from the IDG group. The only other tech website of any repute till now was TechTree, but that left a lot to be desired.

PCWorld has everything that you would expect to find in a tech portal or magazine. The website is very well designed and has a well thought out navigation. In fact, it looks & feels exactly the way, any top-class tech website should. It has separate sections for tech news, product reviews, buying guides, featured columns, not to forget the free software download section (incidentally, I have always found the software download section in TechTree the high point of that site and I’m sure, PCWorld would have lots of catching up to do on that front). I couldn’t locate any discussion forums though, which is essential for creating a dedicated community around a portal , but I’m sure that must be planned some time pretty soon.

In my role as the head of a small tech startup, I have always felt the need for a comprehensive India centric tech portal, that covers the entire gamut of news, reviews, hardware, software etc. Something, that I could blindly refer to, the next time I am shopping around for a new batch of computers for my office. PCWorld looks exactly like what I always wanted, but never found till now.

This topic might not look interesting at first glance but I promise it will be worth reading it. More than 900 readers subscribed to the feeds of ghacks.net using feedburner alone while many more are using different services to read my feeds. But what are feeds ? They are a short abstract of every article that gets posted here. This means whenever I write an article it will automatically appear in those peoples feed reader software. Many browsers for instance are able to read feeds or can be upgraded to read them.

A Beginner’s Guide to What Goes on Inside that PC published by extremetech a few days ago tries to explain the components of a personal computer without the “geek” language. It aims at a audience that did not have the time or desire to understand how a pc is working. The eight-parts article begins with an introduction and goes on by encouraging everyone to take a look at their own pc. (After saving all work and the like). It would be a good way to print the article to be able to read it and look at the turned off computer at the same time.
