Brightside - switch virtual desktops by moving your mouse

No doors, why windows?

Brightside has been around for a little while, but I’ve just discovered it and it’s a great tool for switching virtual desktops.

I’ve configured it so that when I move my mouse to the far right or left side of my monitor(s) it switches to the next virtal desktop, wrapping around so that if I move right 4 times, I end up back on my first desktop. I’m also using Xinerama to enable two monitors, and Brightside with Xinerama ignores the sides that ‘join’ my two seperate monitors, so I can still easily move between physical monitors. Now I can easily move through virtual monitors as well!

In Ubuntu, simply do the following to install it.

sudo apt-get install brightside

Get it running by typing:

brightside

Once it’s installed, you can configure it by typing:

brightside-properties

You can have it start when you boot by going to System-> Preferences-> Sessions and then the Startup Programs tab. Add a new startup program and type ‘brightside’.
