Speedup Ubuntu with “Faster Dapper”

Eeasy to use shell script that speeds up Ubuntu 6.06 (“Dapper Drake”). It does so by:

  • Enabling the “Completely Fair Queuing” process scheduler to handle high CPU usage situations better
  • Install an adaptive readahead daemon (“preload”)
  • Eenabling prelink (which causes big applications like firefox and OO.o to load faster)
  • Disabling ipv6 (to improve network responsiveness and speed dhcp lease negotiation at boot time)
  • Enabling various GNOME tweaks for speed
  • hdparm tewaks (to speed up your hard drive)
  • Disabling “unnecessary” services (e.g. hplip: hp printers, bluez-utils: bluetooth, pppd-dns, laptop-mode pcmcia pcmciautils – you’ll need to comment out things you want to keep)

Download the script and run with sudo on Ubuntu 6.06 only.

Warning: Please note that this script is expermintal, and not supported by Ubuntu. If you are happy with Ubuntu’s performance, don’t bother. Alternativley, you can execute single, selected, steps manually.
